HISTORY OF ESTABLISHMENT
The Department of Pharmacology is a pre-clinical department within the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). It was established in 1974. At that time, the department was located at Jalan Dr. Latif, Kuala Lumpur, near Hospital Kuala Lumpur. In 2014, the Department of Pharmacology moved to its current premises, which is on the 17th floor of the Pre-Clinical Building, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, located at Jalan Yaacob Latiff, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.
As of the year 2025, the Department of Pharmacology comprises 12 academic staff members and 14 support and implementation staff, including one Administrative Assistant, one Office Secretary Assistant, one Science Officer, one Research Officer, seven Assistant Medical Science Officers, and three Operations Assistants. The Department of Pharmacology is involved in teaching Year 1 and Year 2 medical students (under the Integrated Curriculum). The lecturers in this department are not only involved in teaching pharmacological aspects within various core modules for Year 1 and 2 medical courses, but also fully participate in the teaching of other modules such as “Professional and Personal Development,” “Clinical Sciences,” and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) sessions.Several lecturers from this department also deliver lectures to students at the Faculty of Dentistry.
Additionally, the lecturers supervise final-year research projects for students in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science and Bachelor of Pharmacy programs under the Faculty of Health Sciences. Academic staff in this department are also actively involved in supervising postgraduate students at the Master’s and Doctoral (PhD) levels.
